Variable-dispense Applicator Improves Product Quality and Material Use for Disposable Hygiene Products

Nordson Corporation recently produced and posted to YouTube an animation demonstrating the capabilities and benefits of the patented Trio™ variable dispense applicators. A triple-shim nozzle coupled with a multi-hydraulic, zoned manifold and application-specific dispensing modules produce patterns with different add-on weights in both machine and cross-web directions from a single applicator. This capability meets the trending variable add-on adhesive patterns in nonwovens applications, such as disposable hygiene product construction, to reduce material costs and improve product performance.

Trio applicators use a slot nozzle with three shims that create paths for materials, such as hot melt adhesives, to be applied to substrates. Patterns are created by cycling high-speed, long-life Speed-Coat® modules to precisely place adhesive in even demanding intermittent applications.

The ability to apply different add-on rates means a disposable hygiene product can more cost- and production-efficiently meet varying functional (e.g., bond strength) and sensory (e.g., hand) performance needs. And, this higher-quality, higher-performing product saves material by optimizing add-on rates for each of the various pattern positions.
