My laboratory animal experience was developed in Singapore where I worked as a clinical veterinarian for Singapore General Hospital, the first institution in the country to be accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International. Thereafter, I completed my residency in Comparative Medicine at Penn State (Hershey Medical Center) and worked at the University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston) as a clinical veterinarian before joining ULAM.

I have teaching responsibilities in the ULAM post-doctoral training program in laboratory animal medicine and biomedical research. I am also the faculty veterinarian for some animal facilities in the campus. My clinical and research interests include infectious disease, rodent colony health, nonhuman primate medicine, training and education, husbandry, occupational health and safety, and facility management. I am an active member of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), Association of Primate Veterinarians (APV), and the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

The Use, Design and Flaws of Personal Protective Equipment

Abstract: Personal protective equipment, or "PPE", is equipment worn to minimize exposure to serious injuries and illnesses that may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other hazards. PPE is widely used in biomedical research and in health sciences and hospital settings, and may include gloves, gowns, body suits, respirators, facemasks, and shoe covers among others depending on the hazard involved. Most recently, the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in West Africa and the subsequent clinical cases in the United States have highlighted the importance of the proper use of PPE. This presentation will discuss the use of PPE and its pitfalls in biocontainment.
