LoboaElizabeth G. Loboa, PhD

Assistant Professor, North Carolina State University

Dr. Elizabeth Loboa received her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Davis and her M.S. and PhD in Biomechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, respectively, from Stanford University. Upon completion of her PhD in 2002, Dr. Loboa worked as an Acting Assistant Professor at Stanford prior to accepting a position as an Assistant Professor in 2003 in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University. Simultaneously, she formed and began serving as Director of the Cell Mechanics Laboratory (http://www.bme.ncsu.edu/labs/cml) at NC State. Research in her laboratory focuses on combined empirical and computational approaches to quantitatively determine and deliver biomimetic mechanical, electrical, and material stimuli to human stem cells for functional tissue engineering of bone and cartilage. In particular, work in her laboratory focuses on finite element analyses of in vivo tissue regeneration in order to quantify and apply biomimetic in vivo mechanical and material stimuli to human bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) and human adipose derived stem cells (hASC) in 3D culture in vitro. Mechanotransduction mechanisms associated with accelerated and increased hMSC and hASC chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation are also investigated. Dr. Loboa is a member of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society, Society for Physical Regulation in Biology and Medicine, Biomedical Engineering Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Orthopaedic Research Society. She has served as a reviewer for the Canada Foundation for Innovation, National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health. Current funding for her research is provided by the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center (NC based industry cooperative) and the National Institutes of Health (both NIBIB and NCRR Institutes). She is currently an Associate Professor in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering at UNC-CH/NCSU and Materials Science and Engineering at NCSU. She also holds adjunct faculty positions in the Departments of Fiber and Polymer Science (NCSU), Physiology (NCSU), and Orthopaedics (UNC-CH). She is an author on 6 book chapters, over 100 peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and approximately 40 peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Loboa is a recipient of the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Award (2005), the Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award (2009), the UK-US Stem Cell Collaboration Development Award (2009), and was named in 2010 as a Stanford University Distinguished Alumni Scholar.
