Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation in China: What Western Companies Need to Know

Abstract: While the West frequently overlooks or criticizes innovation and intellectual property in China, a remarkable revolution is taking place in which IP rights are steadily being strengthened as innovation is rapidly accelerating. Those blind to these changes may miss significant opportunities or face unexpected competitive threats. The rapid rise of China's IP system and IP laws will be reviewed, with a discussion of enforcement results experienced by Western companies. Current gaps and strengths will be noted. China's recent IP creation activities and surge in innovation will also be discussed, with a discussion of implications and opportunities for Western companies.
